Review by Metal Mom

This is from what I heard, one of the most anticipated albums of the year. Its been 8 years since WINTERSUN has released an album. I try not to let others influence my reviewing, but I hadn’t heard good things, so I was dreading the task.

1. When Time Fades Away
2. Sons of Winter and Stars
3. Land of Snow and Sorrow
4. Darkness and Frost
5. Time

Jari Mäenpäa (vocals, guitars, bass, programming’s)
Kai Hahto (drums)
Jukka Koskinen (Bass)
Teemu Mäntysaari (Guitars)

I am not sure where to begin, I haven’t heard or listened to Wintersun before, so this is a first for me. And to tell you the truth, I don’t think I could put this album sound into any one particular genre. It has a mix of melodic metal, some power metal and much orchestration making this a real pleasure to listen to. There is so much to be heard on here, there is no way to listen to this album once and hear it all, it’s a CD that needs to be heard multiple times to get the whole spec of things. An extremely well put together piece. For me, what I enjoyed most was the multi layers, not boring in the least. I was told that Jari is an extremely talented musician, and I can see why this was said, if this is what comes of 8 years absence, then yes, it is so worth the wait. They is a lot of keyboard, symphony work here making it something that stands out above the rest, something that no matter how many times you listen, you wont have heard it all, in fact you will pick up some sounds that you didn’t hear the first time you listened. Its like taking a journey through gates of time, beyond the galaxy, to an infinite cosmos.

The clean vocals, well executed, don’t be disappointed, they are just whats needed to compliment this album. You can hear that a lot of thought and time have been done to put this album out to their fans. Its an album that I recommend, a little different, but a fantastic melodic symphony that’s so worth your time in listening to. Because of the extensive elements, the whole works of “time saga” is split into two individual albums (Time I and Time II). The artwork created for Time I was done by Cameron Gray (Born of Osiris, Dead Letter Circus), an epic vision.

Definitely an epic metal Finnish titans masterpiece. Its now “Time” to get your hands on this, and thoroughly enjoy something that stands out above the rest, for the ingenuity of such a creation.
