This killer lineup was held at the Rickshaw Theatre in Vancouver, BC last night (Aug.21). If you missed this show, you missed one of the best at the Rickshaw. The doors were at 6pm, time to check merch before Starkill hit the stage at 8pm.

You may remember STARKILL from their last tour here with Krisiun/Arsis in May of this year. That was my first experience with them. I was impressed then, and am still impressed with this young lineup. For only being around a short time, started back in 2008, these guys have nailed their sound. Definitely a melodic metal, with some great riffs happening, and drum blasts that vary to keep your interest. The crowd was there for them, but being the start of the night, not a very energetic crowd, too bad, because the band deserved much moshing, head banging, and more. Always a must see when they come to town. Great set. Don’t make the mistake of missing them just because they are the opening act, they killed it.

ARSIS, well saw them too in May. They are a little more technical, with some black metal and thrash tossed in to get the crowd moving. Moshers were there alright, doing what they do, but not knowing how to do it. Middle of the floor guys. Anyway, Arsis has the attention of the crowd with some newer and older songs from their repertoire. Like I said they were here in May also. They put on a great set as well. Crowd was more enthusiastic with them.

Next is FLESHGOD APOCALYPSE. Setting up the stage there was a change in what came out, a piano, and an extra mic. This should be interesting, did they make a mistake in set up, or was there something new added to the bands set. Much to my surprise a woman with a feather mask walked across the stage and stood by one of the mics, a fellow came out and sat down at the piano, then the rest of Fleshgod came out. WOW!! The woman is Veronica Bordacchini, a soprano singer that came with them for this tour, and let me tell you, what a fantastic addition. Truthfully, I enjoyed these two additions, it added so much more ambiance to their set. I am a huge fan of symphonic metal, and this band captured my attention through all the songs they played. Did the other fans enjoy, well I couldn’t move from where I was, but managed to turn around to see fans moshing, headbanging, and just all around enjoying every minute. That in itself says it all for Fleshgod Apocalypse. Never a band to be missed, they executed their set with exceptional accuracy.

Well I thought I couldn’t move for Fleshgod, but I really couldn’t move for WINTERSUN, the headlining band tonight, this is also their first headlining tour.  I had people leaning on me, or balancing with their hand on my shoulder. Its all good, it’s a metal show, and metalheads support. What amazed me the most, every song they sang, the crowd was singing right along with them. I have never been to a show where each and every song the fans were just belting out along with the band. That is what I call dedicated fans. The band seemed to enjoy the enthusiasm too. I probably don’t need to tell you that Jari(vocals), used to be in Ensiferum, Wintersun is his new project. Finland seems to have a lot of great bands, but this one by far had everyone’s full attention and I understand why. Although I could only stay for 4 songs (had to drive an hour home, up early for work), I got to take a journey of time through their songs. They moved around the stage, they performed exceptionally well. This was a first for me for Wintersun, and I can say that it won’t be my last. This is the band that everyone came to see on a Wednesday night, great turn out for mid week. Looking around the room, it was all ages enjoying, and it’s obvious why, its not hard, brutal, smack you in the face kind of style, its more melodic, they seem to break through the norm, and leave you wanting more. I heard all great things about the songs I missed. Next time, I am going to make sure to see the whole set, just 4 is not enough, you feel like you have missed out. I can understand all the talk about WINTERSUN now that I have witnessed their crusade. Amazing.
