Welcome to Metaltitans, Guardians of Metal Entertainment Worldwide, we are here with Jonathan from Swedish band TRIBULATION. Who have released their newest Cd 'The Children of the Night". Thank you for taking the time to do this interview.

1. You have a new album that’s been released April 20 (Europe), April 21 (North America) through Century Media Records, tell us how you came to choose “The Children of the Night” for the album title?

At some point in the process of creating the album Jakob mentioned pointed out that “Creatures Of The Night” (by Kiss) is a very elegant album title, and that it really would suit our upcoming record. Some days later had the name “The Children Of The Night” emerged, partly as a direct result of Jakob’s remark, but also as a reference to our previous work and the overarching theme of horror and Nosferatu, which more than once has had the role of visually represent our work. (See for example the second phrase in “The Vampyre” on our first album “The Horror”.)

2. Tell us who composes the lyrics for the songs, and if there was some kind of inspiration behind the words?


Me (Jonathan) and Adam have been composing the music as well as the lyrics.
The songs’ themes and contents differ from each other, but by looking at them from an above perspective we concluded that in the end of the day we are approaching the same things, although from different directions. As for myself, the lyrics must stem from something in connection with personal experience, and it must be meaningful in the sense that you are strongly connected to it through your feelings. If it were not, I would have wasted my own as well as everyone else’s time by writing something without substance.

3. The recording/mixing and production was done by Ola Ersfjord in several Swedish studios, and then mastered by Chris Common in Texas, tell us why all the different studios, is there not just one who could complete all the work on the album?


By using all these studios we were able to make the most of our time and budget, utilizing it in the most efficient way in order to reach the best result possible. One studio was ideal for recording drums, another for guitars and yet another for additional instruments and so on. It would of course have been more comfortable to stay in just one place, but then we would probably have ended up with something else than what ”The Children Of The Night” turned out to become - perhaps for the better, but more likely for the worse.

4. What can people expect from this album compared to previous ones?

Something else, but with the same, even enhanced, spirit. We are not relying as much on genre conventional elements as we have done before, but the eeriness and horror remains as a means for us to express ourselves. I actually think one of the most influential (yet subtle) differences is that the drums are not extreme metal-drums anymore. There is not a D-beat, blast beat or any grind as far as the eye can see. We have firmly walked towards the horizon for such a long time, that we have reached a point where the horizon we are currently gazing at is another one than from the one that loomed far away when we started our journey. The travels have only made us stronger in our conviction and dedication.

5. Do you yourself have a favourite song on the album, and why that one?

Strangely enough, it is actually a cover that has not been released yet. It is so unexpected that you won’t believe it, but maybe just because of that tension that was created between our interpretation and this other artist’s music that great creativity could take place. It is a song that I listened to a lot as a kid, so it already held a special place in my heart. But I think we really did it justice, and even went somewhere beyond that - to a whole new, uncharted place,

6. What made you decide to put the combination of foreboding death and black metal with vintage rock/metal together? You guys do an amazing job of it by the way, have seen you play live twice, and really was impressed.

Thank you, but it was not that deliberate as you put it, we were not thinking in terms of  “combining styles”. As the record took form, new ideas and ways of thinking slowly became an implicit foundation upon which the music could come into being. We were as influenced and inspired by each other as we were by anything else, and that’s in my opinion what makes music that comes from a band with more than one creative driving force unique. It’s what makes a band a band. The music is bigger than one person’s vision or ego, and in the end is no one controlling it, yet it comes from everyone.

7. The album cover is a haunting beautiful piece of artwork painted by you guitarist Jonathan Hultén, who also created the band's previous album covers, do you have a direction, or you just know exactly what it is you want to express ?


We are deciding upon the visual direction together. For the last two albums we have had originals, which I have interpreted with my own style of illustrating. The Formulas Of Death’s cover is derived from Hugo Von Habermann’s “Die Sirene” from 1894, and The Children Of The Night’s cover comes from the movie “Les Vampires” by Louis Feuillade from 1915. But as for our first album, it came about in a much more spontaneous manner. The main character is actually a self-portrait by me with exaggerated features, put together with an reproduction of an illustration Adam did when we were in school together (the one in the edges).


8. How did you all come to be in the band together?

We all grew up in the same town, and Adam and I have been playing together since we were 13 years old. We were a group of people who were playing together in numerous constellations (some more and some less serious), and we all rehearsed at the same place. Tribulation and Enforcer are perhaps the only two of those bands from that era that kept on playing and are still being active.

9. When you create the music for a new album, do each of the members create theirs, like guitarist create their riffs, drummer creates his own beats, or is it all created by one and the others learn?

A little bit of both. To be able to do something together, you have to have a starting point. That’s when one of us comes up with a basic idea for a song or a riff, and from there we are all taking part in the arranging and creating of the song by contributing with one’s own way of playing and thinking. I usually like to formulate my ideas as thoroughly as possible, so I always record demos before I show them to the rest of the guys. In the end we might end up dissecting that idea anyway, but at least you would have let everyone take part in your line of thought, and through that you will learn to understand each other better. Communication is important.

10. Tell us something about Tribulation that people might not know?


We are all males.

11. You have a box set with this album that looks like an amazing deal, and it is only limited to 1000 copies worldwide, (containing: 2LP (black vinyl) plus 16 page LP booklet / CD with 2 bonus tracks (In paper wallet) / 7” (black vinyl) with 2 exclusive songs / Pendant with cord / Numbered and signed art print of the album artwork. Impressive, do you decide on what goes into this or does the label?

We worked it out together. They came up with suggestions and a list of options, and from that we had a choice of which way to go. The first 500 of those art prints are signed in our own blood, so they are even more exclusive.

12. You did a tour that came to Vancouver with Cannibal Corpse and Behemoth, do you think this tour added more fans for you?

I believe that that is one of the things about going on tour, especially big ones like the above mentioned; you meet a lot of new people, and many who have never heard of you before are exposed to your music for the first time.

13. What was the best experience for you on that tour?


To get a chance to perform and develop our art on such excellent stages, in front of so many people, every night. To meet all the nice and enthusiastic persons after the shows. To hang out with the great guys in Behemoth, Cannibal Corpse and Aeon. To enjoy the scenery from the Bandwagon. (Especially between Vancouver and Edmonton, ah the mountains!) I am very grateful for all of this.

14. Will you be touring once “Children of the Night” is released? And if so where? Hopefully it will include a North American tour. :)

Nothing is settled yet, but we will definitely return to North American soon, I really hope so too!

15. What do you want people to think of when they think Tribulation?

I would not want to steer people into thinking anything specific. Come to our show and draw your own conclusions. Actually, I would refrain from thinking about it like that at all. Being too self-conscious and anxious about what other people might think is inhibiting and a waste of time. Following my guts and pursuing my goals is enough for me.
