Review By: Metal Mom

TOXIC HOLOCAUST was formed by Joel Grind in 1999, who is also responsible for the first 2 albums which he wrote and recorded. Members for this album consist of Joel Grind (vocals, guitar), Phil Zeller (bass/vocals), and on drums we have Nick Bellmole, additional musician is Tim Smith who does backing vocals. This is also the first release featuring a full band in the studio, instead of Joel painstakingly performing all instruments and vocals himself. This punk/thrash metal styled band is based out of Portland, Oregon, which is also home to Voodoo Doughnuts.

First I have to say I was surprised to listen and actually like this CD. As many of you know, I am not a huge thrash/punk admirer. I can listen, but it has to be smooth, the transitions from slower to fast, has to be done with some thought, not messy, where the drums have one sound, the guitars are on different riffs, all over the place. You know the kind, where you just don’t know which beat to listen to. But every once in awhile there is a cd that I am amazed at, and this is one of them. This cd is well put together, musically and vocally. Its really refreshing to hear a band that so single minded , that they have put their sharp, distinct, demanding riffs along with some classic drum skills and pull the whole sound together, to show their true skill at what they do. The vocals create the perfect performance to top it all off. Even when the speed has picked up, it all falls right into place. There isn’t any chance of waiting for a minute to see when to whirlwind your hair, or tap your foot, your going to be doing it through all 10 tracks. From start to finish, this is first rate. They truly have surpassed all other works in their discography. So in other words, their best so far.
