THOMSEN EXCLUSIVE

Welcome to Metaltitans, Guardians of Metal Entertainment Worldwide, we are here with Rene Thomsen from THOMSEN, out of  Hannover, Germany.

1. Tell us how and why THOMSEN formed ?

…over the years when I was working for all those metal bands as guitar tec or backline tec I needed to play a little guitar and drums to be able to do a  proper sound check without the band…this ended up in rehearsing at home at least one song of every band I was working with - and so it came that I started writing my own stuff . . .many years later after I stopped being on tour so much I had even more time to do so and in 2006 I started writing in a serious way and produced my first Record “lets get Ruthess” with Herman Frank . . . So that came out in 2009 and after a Show in 2012  ( which I really liked) - I/we decided to carry on . . .

2. Your genre is heavy metal/power metal, great combination, but what made you choose this over others ?

…this is the style most the bands played I was working with and I liked it very much - - -
I was always into fist pumping power cords . . .

 3. Tell us please how each of these members came to be in the band ..

René Thomsen- Guitars
see above ;-)

Denis Brosowski - Vocals ( Live & Studio )
When the recording of unbroken where nearly done - I came out the Robert won´t be able to sing for a while - so we started looking around “AGAIN” and coincidentally we run into Denis “THE VOICE” Brosowski . . this kid is a real weapon  - ( listen to tears of the sun “live” on our website and you will know what I mean).

Robert Soeterboek - Vocals ( Studio)
I heard a Voice on one of those Compilation CD´s that come with some Magazines . .
I looked up who it was, found out his contact details -and the rest is history :-)

Ingo Lühring - Bass
He is a friend of a Local Band and I knew he likes to play some Metal - so that was nice and easy . . . he was the man convincing me to play live the first time :-)

Michael Pesin- Guitars

He was the 3rd of a Nation wide Marshall-Amp Competition and he lives in our Hometown Hannover - we needed a Lead Guitar Player for live - I called him - he came - liked it and stayed . .

Andre Hilgers - Drums
Andre played 4 Songs on the Album “this was awesome” and it was planned to do more - but time difficulties made it impossible  - After we found out that our regular drummer wasn’t able to do THOMSEN - I called him and he returned for a major blast . . .

4. I have to say you have some real powerhouse members on this album: Udo Dirkschneider (UDO), Vinny Appice (Black Sabbath, Dio, Heaven & Hell) drummer for ‘We Made It’, Bobby Jarzombek (Halford, Fates Warning, Sebastian Bach, Riot) drums on ‘Draw The Curtains’, ‘New Horizon’, ‘Unbroken’ and ‘Fools of Fortune’ David Vincent (Morbid Angel) bass on ‘Draw The Curtains’, Mathias Don Dieth (U.D.O.), Andre Hilgers (Rage, Sinner) drums on ‘Dream’, ‘Break That Spell’, ‘Into The Unknown’ and ‘In Steel We Trust’, and Helge Engelke (Fair Warning, Dreamtide).. What made you pick these musicians to be a part of your new album ?

Well I have a relationship  somehow with everybody performing on this album …
Vinny Appice : when I wrote “we made it” and programmed the Demo - it was very clear right away that Vinny had to be the one behind the drums . . . “we had been on a very large Dio Tour” together back in the 80’s…

David Vincent: he is a friend of me and my company BRS “Backline Rental Service” back in 2011 I gave him my first CD and once I started with the new one I asked him out of the blue if he likes to play bass on a track - and he said yes of course  . . .

Bobby: He played already the first album and we stayed in contact ever since  -

Udo: Udo and I go back till late 80’s or earlier - we did some great Tours all over the World and we spend a lot of time together in those days - and we are still friends.

Mathias “Don” Dieth came up with the Idea and fronted Udo with the request . . . etc.. etc..

5. With those big names, it must have been hard to get together and put the album together, knowing they have other commitments. How did you manage it ?

It wasn’t that hard as I expected it to be - not with the professionals on this album! Just the time it took to nail everybody’s music on tape was a bit nerve wrecking. I wrote and pre produced a good demo of all songs in advance so they new what to fill in and record :-)

6. Did they bring their own skills, or did you have the ideas and they learned their parts ?

. . . the basic ideas came all from my end but of course they played what they liked and felt was best for the songs - you don’t need to tell these kind of musicians what to do - they know :-)

7. You have a new album about to be released on October 28th by Artist Station - eOne, are you excited about this one ?

Yes very much. This is the second one  I guess I achieved the next level of Thomsen with this CD. It is released as a Jewel Case all over Europe & all North America for the first time - plus via iTunes and those platforms worldwide  . . . very exiting indeed

8. The reason for the album title Unbroken, is because life is about not letting adverse circumstances get you down but holding on to your dreams and carrying on, are you living proof of this ?

Pretty much yes - in particular the title track lyrics been written towards the very end - I spoke with Helge Engelke and asked him to write about the producing of this album and how he see’s me with it - so “UNBROKEN”.

9. How important do you think the name of the album is to fans, I imagine it’s important for you because it represents something in your life. But do the people just listen to the music and not really think about what’s behind the name to the album ?

wow - that I don’t know - lets put it this way: my favourite metal band puts out a new album and its title is: “killing me softly” and the other metal band I like as well, is giving his new album the title „“lets get ruthless” . . . what do you think I would by first :-)

10. What can the fans expect from Unbroken ?

That’s easy, straight forward fist pumping high end - classic metal - with an awesome production all around sound - Music - Lyric etc…(if you check in to a 5 star Hotel - this would be a least “the grand penthouse suite”.

11.  Who created the lyrics for this album ?

Helge Engelke  did, he is the other half on this album - he also is responsible for the grand mix & master.

12. Where did the inspiration come from to write them ?

Helge has a very special way to do things - we spoke about various things- we spend a lot of time together and I guess this might happened to be some of the influence . . .

13. Love the look of the album cover, what was the inspiration behind it ?

Ohh okay - I wanted a very clear and simple but for itself speaking cover saying -
“by me - I am not elevator music at all” - “I gonna kick your Ass”.

14. After the release of your album, do you plan on touring ?

We do a kick off  Show on March 20th here in Hometown Hannover City - and then we see what the summer brings up . . .I plan to do a live recording as well . . .

15. Do you have plans to tour after the release, and does North America fit into that schedule ?

I guess touring in the US is a bit over budget these days for a “no name band”.

16. Where is a dream place for you to play ?

Oh there is a few  - but mainly I would like to open up for the friends of  Machine Head
and maybe the Scorpions if there is a slot - that can be anywhere . . .

17. Tell us something that no one would know about Thomsen.

Maybe that I used to be a drummer in the first place, and that the show we did in 2012 was my first ever live show in front of an audience that really  came to see me / us . . .

18. What do you think of today’s music ?

Hmm - I am not thinking to much about this - I do write and play whatever I like - I don’t listen to the radio so much, but I guess what I can say is that there is so much music out there that’s just “Voice” and Voice alone  - the music behind it make me feel it could be anything - its just the voice that has to do it all . . . very sad -

19. I am embarrassed to say, that I had not heard of Thomsen before getting the chance to do this interview, but I am really impressed with your music, and style, I am hooked, and I am pretty sure others will be to. Is there anything you would like to add to this interview that I might have missed asking, but you want people to know ? . . .

No not really  - I am grateful that I had the opportunity to do this interview and some more people get to know my band - I really would love the people to have a listen in the net to our stuff - its made very well - it has real “SONGS” not just some ego guitar lick chasing the other . . . go get it - it really would touch me.

Thank you so much for taking the time to do this interview with us at Metaltitans, and we wish you much success with Unbroken, and hope that at some time your touring brings you over to North America.

Thank you very much for the chance to do this interview - I really hope that I was able to give you some answers - Thank you very much indeed - René Thomsen
