TENGGER CALVARY EXCLUSIVE

Metaltitans had a chance to chat with Nature G. from global Music Award-winning nomadic folk metal group TENGGER CAVALRY. They have already released two new singles from their upcoming album, Die On My Ride, on June 2 via M-Theory Audio. The tracks, entitled “ HYPERLINK "https://youtu.be/UsAMgdDBANE" Die On My Ride” and “ HYPERLINK "https://youtu.be/6fC5laaG1GU" Ashley” portray two very different sides of the band, both musically and conceptually. Read below what he had to say.

1: How did Tengger Cavalry start as a band in 2010?

I think at that time, I was really inspired by a bunch of different Viking metal bands and wanted so badly to create something with some Asian folk stuff in it. It was a solo project in the beginning for few years, exploring possibilities. Then eventually I found the way to phrase the music more appropriately.

2: Being a Nomadic Folk metal band with influences of Mongolian and Central Asian culture what is the writing process for your music from pen to paper to instruments?

It really depends, there are several ways I would write it: guitar riff and chorus first, then add drum, then compose the Mongolian fiddle melodies, OR, just go directly into the drum beat, thinking about what kind of rhythm I want for this song, and later on add other parts.

3: You guys now call New York your home and has American culture influenced how you either write or perform live?

Definitely. We are very diverse now, just like NYC, a place of diversity. And we have more musical elements than before, we now have Siberian musical influence and even some Native American flute parts in our songs. It is great to combine influences together.

4: Die On Your Ride will be your latest release for 2017 and wanted to know concept behind this record?

It is a pretty musically diverse album. Lots of Western melodies and pop choruses to go along with the original Oriental metal sound, which we never did before, and lots of piano parts to decorate the details of melodies. It is fun to add different concept for new songs.

5: What makes Die On My Ride stand out from your previous album releases?

Musical creation aside, I think it is the lyrics. We discuss many things that EVERYONE can relate to compared to the traditional war or horse themes we were previously known for. Many new songs are about overcoming discrimination, overcoming people's judgement and enlightening and embracing your true self.

6: What track or tracks for you stands out from the rest on the new album?

I would say “Ashley”. It is a total pop song. I would like to surprise our fans with this song after several heavy tracks. “Me Against Me” is also fun because it is a bit of industrial with electronic stuff but still heavy as fuck.

7: Have you guys picked what songs you will play off the new album on your upcoming tour?

Yes. We have “Die on My Ride” opening the set, then we have heavy and dark “Independence Day”, and we have “Me Against Me” closing the set. We also have “To the Sky” as a slow rock and roll song for people to chill between the heavy songs.

8: Can you tell me about your experience as a musician in Beijing? Did you have any sort of training to become a musician?

I was professionally trained in Mongolian fiddle and throat singing back in Beijing, so that gave me the cultural education I need to understand Mongolian folk traditions. Also, traveling between grassland and experiencing nomadic life helped a lot too. After all, we are singing about nomadic culture.

9: You have a new lineup and tour and wanted to know what fans will expect seeing you live in 2017?

We will have new stage presence, and new songs of course. But we will bring more wild and savage energy on stage than any tour we’ve done before!

10: We talked about your music roots and influences and is there any other music you might listen to on the side and give credit to influencing what you do today with Tengger Cavalry?

I listen to a lot of film soundtracks, actually. The emotional transition and storytelling-type of composing music is very inspiring to me.

11: While playing live you wear tradition Mongolian clothing. Where did you end up acquiring these articles of clothing?

I got them when I went back to Inner Mongolia, from local stores or my friends made them for me.

12: Thank you for taking the time to speak to us about what you do. Any last words for your fans?

We really appreciate all of the support from each and every fan and will keep on fighting to make better music for you guys!
