Everyone seems to know the band that rose out of Sweden back in 1989, for me, this is the first time seeing them play live. I checked into them before heading down, and found that there have been many lineup changes, but there is one constant band member, who happens to be the singer, guitarist and songwriter Mikael Åkerfeldt.

I didn’t want to listen before the show, I like hearing firsthand what a band can do. Wow, impressive for sure, a lot of variety to their songs, some extremely long, but hey, when it is so well put together, do you really care. Sorry, can’t tell you the name of the songs, but I am told they played many. My favourite was “Ghost of Perdition”, I just had to find out what the song was called because it was so amazing, it might have been one of the longest they played, but there was so much happening in this song, making it a real joy to listen to. Looking around the Orpheum Theatre, it was packed solid, and everyone was cheering, having an epic time.

I could not stay long, I didn’t even think I could make it, but I had to give it a shot to listen to a band I had never heard before, and who people rave over. Now I can understand why. They have gotten some bad, and good reviews over time, but they stay true to themselves, do what they want, creating some exceptional music. I am glad they don’t bow down to pressure.

If you get a chance, please, grab yourself a ticket, sadly not for North America, their tour ended here in Vancouver. They do have tour dates for Europe though. I hope they come back, I would like to see and enjoy a full set. Everyone I talked to the next day, said it was amazing, great choice of songs, impeccable performance.
