JULY 2nd 2012
NORTHERN PLAGUE EXCLUSIVE

Welcome to MetalTitans, Guardians of Metal Entertainment Worldwide, we are here with Damyen, drummer for the polish band NORTHERN PLAGUE, who formed back in July 2009 by guitarist/vocalist Fenris and Saryon, drummer of Ukrainian descent. After several months, the lineup was complete with the addition of Ghorakh (bass) and Janus (lead guitar). Intense work was then started , and would become an EP “Blizzard of the North” which was recorded/mixed and mastered over the months of September-December of 2010 in Bialystok at the Hertz Studio (Vader, Decapitated, Hate, Vesania and Behemoth). Sadly after 2 years Saryon decided to leave the band, but in his place came a very ambitious, talented drummer, Damyen. Currently the band is focusing on some intense promotion of the first release. NORTHERN PLAGUE has had the pleasure of sharing the stage with the likes of Lost Soul, Azarath, Nammoth, Neuropathia and has gained much experience while performing in major Polish cities.

Thank you for taking the time to do this interview with us.

Sure, its a pleasure.

1. Whats the news within Northern Plague?

Mostly, intense preparation for some summer shows, we're going to support Decapitated soon in Swiecie (Poland) and in mid-august we're going off to tour around Poland. No details that I can give away right now. But its quite a busy schedule, about 20 gigs in three and a half weeks, so looking forward to that one.

2. What made you decide on the death/black metal genre ?

I play death/black metal only in Northern Plague. I've done it in my first band back in 2004, but apart from that I also did many other styles of music from jazz, blues, rock and even classical music as a pianist. However, there is a peculiarity in heavy music, that I just cannot resist. Especially live, what I find so great is not the fast tempos, or the heavy riffs and growls. Its more about the mental experience, you give away so much energy, you can basically have a bad day, go out, play a set, and come off stage smiling.

3. Northern Plague has 4 members , Fenris (vocals/guitar), Janus (lead guitar), Ghorakh (bass/additional vocals), and Damyen (drums), how did you all come to the band ?

Fenris is the founder of the band. He began with ex-drummer Saryon. Ghorakh and Janus joined in 2010. I was the last person to join in April of 2011.

4. Do you all live in the city of Bialystok, Poland , which would make it easier to get together to work on material ?

Now we do live quite close to each other. Our rehearsal room is about 15 miles from Bialystok. Ghorakh and I, we live in Bialystok, Janus lives nearby and Fenris lives in the small City, where we have our rehearsals. But it wasn't always like that. For almost a year I've been driving more than 350 miles from my hometown, Ujscie to Bialystok. The reason was, that they found me on the internet, and I really liked the music they played and wanted to join, so I didn't really care about the distance. But to be honest it was a pain in the ass. About 10 hours one way via train. I knew that that wouldn't last long, so in March 2012 I moved to Bialystok, that really helped the band to be more efficient.

5. When you were growing up, what kind of music did you enjoy listening to ?

All kinds of music. I always loved orchestral music, and rock. I always tried to be open minded and listen to as much different types of music as I could.

6. Northern Plague have done an EP called “Blizzard of the North” and it was recorded at the Hertz Studio, which seems to be a big name in Poland, is this why you chose to record the EP there ?

Yeah, Hertz Studio is known internationally for its high quality and many bands from Europe and even outside of Europe come there to record. Another advantage was that the studio is located in Bialystok. So it was a real no-brainer.

7. Who writes the lyrics, and do you have a concept when writing ?

The lyrics are usually done by Fenris. Mostly there are references to ancient mythology, a bit of nihilism, misanthropy basically negative aspects of human nature. What I like about them, is that they really fit into our music.

8. Endorsements?

Fenris and Janus have for some time been endorsing MG Amplification – really great quality guitar amps. Recently I also have been lucky and signed a deal with a company making hand made drums called Kurowski Drums. They made me a beautiful snare drum which will go out as a separate, signature model. I'm doing a photo shoot really soon for them, I urge you to check it out.

9. What would be your dream tour, what bands, or places would be amazing for you ?

Maybe not a dream tour, but a dream carrier, would be to tour for 300+ days a year, all over the world. As for bands I'd like to share the stage with, I would say Behemoth, Dimmu Borgir and Gojira, because I have boundless respect for those bands. Maybe one day... (laugh)

10. Do you have new material that the band is working on ?

Yes, we're working on new material as we speak. For now I can say, that we have a good vision about the first full length album and the songs we have already come up with are great. Can't wait to go to the studio with the material.

11. When could we expect to hear the album?

It will probably be around March - April 2013. We still got touring to do in 2012 so we won't enter the studio until late 2012.

Is there something you would like to say, that maybe I have missed asking you ?
