Have I heard of this band before, no. So first I am going to do a little digging and find out a little bit about the band, nice to have some background on them before reviewing their work. And for those of you who are not familiar with the band, I will add a little info in here for you as well.

Roger, Thomas and Tobias, although not in the same band,  all rehearsed at the same place in a small Swedish town called Varberg. In the middle of their teens Roger / Thomas left to pursue their career somewhere else. Roger headed east and Thomas north, and Tobias continued on at home. In 2001, after many years touring, recording, they met up again for a Jimi Hendrix tribute concert in Varberg. This time they thought it would be a good idea to start a band. Hence, KAMCHATKA came to be with Roger being the one to come up with the name.

After awhile they decided to record, in the studio with an old friend of Roger’s (Nicholas Elgstrand) who recorded, mixed and produced it. Then friends of the band, Bullen and Sillen, mastered it at Studio Mega in Valinge, just outside Varberg. Per Wiberg, an old friend of Thomas’s designed the cover artwork. After being hooked up with New York indie label Grooveyard Records, the first KAMCHATKA album was released on January 1, 2005.

Just after a year, and the guys were getting restless, so came another album, “Volume II”, with the band recording it themselves on an 8track. Tobias brought in some technical expertise, and again called on Nicholas to help mix and produce, mastering this time was completed by the band. Again the artwork was created by Per Wiberg. This was released January 2007.

With the lack of venues at the time in Sweden, and only playing an occasional gig the band started to record their 3rd album. Clutch at this time invited the band to open for them on their USA tour, giving the guys the chance to share music with the American fans. After touring , they returned to complete “Volume III”, this album was mastered by Johan Eckerblad at Mintelligence Studios and released March 2009. Once again Clutch asked for the band to open for them on a tour (23gigs) throughout western Europe.

In 2010 the band concentrated on writing their 4th album. It was recorded/mixed at their own Shrimpmonkey Studios, mastered by Johan Eckerblad (Mintelligence Studios). Their 4th was released September 5th.

The 5th studio album from the Swedish hard rock trio KAMCHATKA “THE SEARCH GOES ON” was released on Feb 2014.

So now it’s time to get on with the review for Kamchatka’s “The Search Goes On”. It’s now 2014, and they have band members:
Per Wiberg - (bass/vocals)
Tobias Strandvik - (drums)
Thomas “Juneor” Andersson - (guitar/vocals)

Early on the band decided to record the album in their own Shrimpmonkey studios located in Thomas and Tobias hometown, Varberg, Sweden. The band also had a pretty good idea who they wanted as producer besides themselves, long time friend and college Mr. Per Wiberg (Candlemass, ex Opeth, King Hobo, Spiritual Beggars, etc).

For various reasons they had no bass player when recording sessions started, so Per Wiberg, man behind producing was asked to help out on bass. As some of you may know Per does amazing work with bass, and keyboards (proof if you have seen him play over the years with a multitude of bands). 2013, saw them off and on recording. With such amazing bass work, Mr. Wiberg was asked to become a fulltime member, and to the bands great amazement, he accepted.

Well it seems to me that Sweden is getting a name for taking over the genre of rock and metal. If you listen closely you can hear the influences in their music, which gives them a wide diversity to their style, more of the best of classic sounding talent. Definitely 10 tracks of some enjoyable listens, with some all-powerful riffs, classic drum beats, and just all around belt it out and have fun. Oh, and let’s not forget, some pretty amazing solos. The vocals are classic, almost vintage here, giving this whole album that hard rock feel. You can’t go wrong with these talented musicians, each member bringing their own top quality style to the album, making it a must have for any discerning ear.

If you are a fan of the older classic 60/70 styles, even if you are not, this is an album that you will enjoy, its impressive, and one that showcases their talent. If you are a fan, then this is one you already have, if you are new, then give it a listen, I am pretty sure that you will find this album “The Search Goes On” is one you will need to have in your collection. The search doesn’t need to go on, this album itself is all you need.
