MARCH 4th 2018

Well Rickshaw held another headbanging event tonight, Sunday, March 4th. No wonder, considering headliners tonight are Iced Earth, and last time we covered them was May 7, 2014, so basically 4 years ago. With shows in winter, you expect things to happen, and it did, due to some bad bus / weather luck, both Divinity and Kill Ritual didn't perform, which was okay, it just meant that Sanctuary and Iced Earth would fill the time.

Up first was Sanctuary, and this was to be a tribute to Warrel Dane, who passed away last December. I personally would love to have seen a large poster on stage of Warrel while they played. It was tough to watch, because you always think of Warrel up there. But if you get passed that, Joseph Michael of Witherfall filling in. All good and dandy, but so many people in the crowd were really ticked off that he was just belting back the booze while singing. Wasn’t maybe such a great choice to be doing that when it was a memorial show. The band performed a great extended set, and Joseph did a good job of filling in. Everyone around me was enjoying the songs played, doing some major headbanging. That is what it’s all about. I understand that they had found a way to make the show, so probably no sleep and running on fumes, but it seemed a shame that it didn’t really feel like a memorial to Warrel. He is sadly missed for sure. RIP Warrel Dane.

Next, well 4 years since seeing ICE EARTH, and I was anxious to be there, and to hear them play again. I was NOT disappointed. We all know them as the American heavy metal band that has a style on their own combining thrash, power, metal, progressive, speed and more, and they do it with style. Plus, it is always great to see Stu Block come home to Vancouver. It was an endless set of phenomenal songs, energy and all-around time for some headbanging. The crowd, just looking back, definitely filled that need. Horns in the air, singing along, you know that everyone there tonight was there for Iced Earth. May have been awhile, but no one walked away from this set disappointed. All out positive energy came from the guys on stage. They played a variety of songs, and I am sure the crowd enjoyed each and every one, with maybe some thoughts of more. They really put 150% into their shows, and it transfers to the crowd. I did have to back off from my front row position, which I can understand, the crowd got a little rambunctious, making it hard for this old Metal Mom to stand her ground. In fact, when you stand at the back, the sound is even better. Yes, I knew that, but there is nothing like standing right up front and seeing the faces of the guys while they perform. They may be metal, thrash and the like but I am sure I saw a few smiles on their faces. I really enjoyed their set, and I hope they return again soon. Thank you for coming to Vancouver during your tour, really appreciated.
