GWAR: BATTLE MAXIMUS

Review by Metal Mom

Battle Maximus is Gwars 13th studio album, which was released September 17 of this year through Metal Blade Records. This album is the first to feature new guitarist Brent Purgason (Cannabis Corpse), who represents the new character Pustulus Maximus. Also the first album to feature bassist Jamison Land, who imitates longtime character Beefcake the Mighty.

Band Members:
Oderus Urungus - vocals
Balsac the Jaws of Death - guitars/backing vocals
Jizmak Da Gusha - drums
Beefcake the Mighty - bass/backing vocals
Pustulus Maximus - lead guitar

The last couple of years have been the most disturbing in the bands history, with the passing of lead guitarist Flattus Maximus (Cory Smoot), in 2011, in time they inducted another member from the Maximus clan, Flattus’s cousin “Pustulus Maximus”. Oderus made this possible by trashing Pustulus space-ship, leaving him high and dry on earth.

This satirical heavy metal band, has returned to earth with some powerful tracks, in fact 12 of them. It’s Gwars struggle against their most evil enemy “Mr. Perfect”. Gwar found themselves standing between us and the newest threat to the devastation of Gwar and their devoted fans.

Battle Maximus was conceived and recorded during the last year at the bands Slave Pit Studios, mixed by veteran producer Glen Robinson, mastered by Howie Weinberg, with producer John Angelo.

Track Listing:
 1. Intro
 2. Madness at the Core of Time
 3. Bloodbath
 4. Nothing Left Alive
 5. They Swallowed the Sun
 6. Torture
 7. Raped at Birth
 8. I, Bonesnapper (Vocals by Bonesnapper)
 9. Mr. Perfect
10. Battle Maximus (Instrumental)
11. Triumph of the Pig Children
12. Falling
13. Fly Now

Who also had their hand in the masters of the universe ultimate expression, here they are -   Bob Gorman (Bonesnapper) - lead vocals on "I, Bonesnapper" Zach Blair (Splattus Maximus) - additional guitar on "Intro", "Bloodbath", "Torture", "Raped at Birth", "Battle Maximus", and "Falling" Todd Evans (Skookum Maximus) - additional guitar on "Battle Maximus" Ol Drake (Twatticus Maximus) - additional guitar on "Battle Maximus" Mark Duane Morton (Tyrone Der Teufel) - additional guitar on "Battle Maximus".

So gather all you Scumdogs, give a listen to what just might be their best album yet. There is some of their normal onslaught, with some melody, and what I call some pretty heavy battles sounds. I am not going to say much, because you need to get off you’re a-- and get out there and get the full force hammered in your face, no preconceived notions of this Battle Maximus in your head. This is GWAR, do I really need to say anymore. Oh yeah, one thing for sure, this album stands as a tribute to the band’s long time guitar played, the unmatched FLATTUS MAXIMUS, who left this earth and returned to the universe to accomplish his destiny almost 2 years ago.

Gwar is presently on tour, check out the dates, and make sure not to miss this bloody experience coming to a town near you.
