The black metal Belgian messengers have returned, and we all knew it was looming in our future.Enthroned has surpassed the boundaries of their 20 year career. With 9 studio albums, several EP’s they seem to be getting more of the recognition they deserve.  It seems with “Obsidium” they were scorned from veering off the path of true black metal. But nothing held them down and they have recently released their 10th album “Sovereigns”.

I am not a huge black metal fan, but with reviewing more and more of this type of music, I am starting to enjoy it more. What can you expect from Enthroned on this album, well how about some dark and heavy guitar riffs, with some frenzied speed at times. Maybe something you don’t expect,  the melodic guitar riffs with toned down solos, a great addition. The drumming is at break neck speed, and the bass you can actually hear, its not all tuned down and mumbling. Lets not forget that chill down your back, wonder what that is, it’s the vocals of  Nornagest. Yeah, I know, there are some that will grumble at the changes, but give it a chance, listen to it more than once, if you like Enthroned, you will appreciate the time it took to make these changes, something they wanted to do on Sovereigns.

Did I enjoy it, yes I did, I liked the dark and the bleak, with forcible aggression. I am not comparing it to any of their others because the album should be judged on its own merit. I do recommend ENTHRONED “Sovereigns”.
