Review by: Metal Mom

ENSIFERUM has been around since 1995, and has steadily put out 5 full albums, 1 EP, one compilation, 3 singles and 3 demo albums. “Unsung Heroes” is their 5th CD, and we can look forward to a Sept 18 release here in North America by Spinefarm Records. By the year 2000 this genre exploded into prominence, especially in Finland.

“Unsung Heroes” is over an hour long, doesn’t seem like 60+ minutes, it went by so fast while I was listening to it. It’s also a album that is in both English and Finnish, a really nice added bonus. They are classified as folk metal, but truthfully with the heroic lyrics, power metal riffs, and the raspy deep sounding vocals, I think I prefer to call them Battle Metal. Their sound is more melodic , with some beautiful folk, and some orchestration to make it the most unique listening experience. I have to say that this album shows these 5 Finnish warriors pushing their music to bold new heights and giving us all a cinematic experience from start to finish. While listening I could just imagine swords raised, while the excellent guitar riffs played, the drums marching on, the vocals commanding. This album definitely reflects the bands style, with the folk elements taking you down a path, only to have the metal make you sit up and take notice. Absolutely an exceptional album, one that I thoroughly enjoyed, and one I will be picking up at the store when it comes out. Its one of those albums that can have you sitting relaxing enjoying the melodic tones, to realizing this is pure talent, and a very diverse album. There are also some special guests included on this album, Apokalyptischen Reiter, plus legendary Finnish singer/actor Vesa-Matti Loiri. The first rate artwork was done by Kristian Wahlin, and mixing of the CD was done by Hiili Hiilesmaa (HIM/Sentenced/Amorphis, etc).

10 exceptional tracks:
 1. Symbols
 2. In My Sword I Trust
 3. Unsung Heroes
 4. Burning Leaves
 5. Celestial Bond
 6. Retribution Shall Be Mine
 7. Star Queen (Celestial Bond Part II)
 8. Pohjola
 9. Last Breath
10. Passion, Proof, Power

If you are a fan of ENSIFERUM, you are going to love this one, and if you are somewhat new to the band, if doesn’t matter, you will be enjoying this for a very long time.
