CATHEDRAL:
ANNIVERSARY

Review By: Metal Mom

CATHEDRAL is a doom metal band out of Coventry, England. This band forged a connection between early doom and the 90’s extreme metal aesthetic, making doom slower and heavier. You want to know what Doom is all about, then you should be listening to CATHEDRAL. But it looks like this is their first and likely their last live CD. They are planning on a new CD “The Last Spine” for 2012, but in February 2011 they announced they were going to call it quits.

The first set here , tracks 1 - 8 are done with the original line up consisting of Mark Griffiths, Adam Lehan, and Mark Smail, and playing the entire debut album from 1991’s Forest of Equilibrium. Second set of songs, 1- 12 are done with the line up of Lee Dorian, Gerry Jennings, Brian Dixon and Leo Smee, with a variety of songs chosen. This double set CD was performed in December of 2010 at London’s Islington Academy.

These guys have been around for 21 years, and lets say they are no way standard/ stagnation or conventional, they are true to their very own style. And for the last bit of their career, Lee is the voice behind the powerful existence. Garry guitar work is dramatic, Leo’s bass is solid, and the meticulous time keeping on drums is done by Brian.

I am not going to make this a long drawn out review, I am just going to say, if you are a doom admirer then you need this one in your collection . And make sure you stay tuned for their very last Cd “The Last Spine” before they hang up their guitars, and put the covers on the drums. That will be a sad day.
