First off, I have one complaint, has nothing to do with the bands, but I am wondering how people get in and snort up cocaine right on the front line. Especially when there are 2 security standing right there watching. Oh, I was even offered it, no way, I don’t do that crap, and I went there to take in the whole show, it doesn’t make it any better, the bands do that.

Friday, March 4th brought to the Commodore Ballroom a death metal head banging experience. This was definitely a colossal experience for everyone that went.

First up tonight is ABYSMAL DAWN from Los Angeles, and a fantastic start to the night. This band, you need to experience, as they deal out some supreme death/black/thrash metal. They previously had van trouble, but lucky for us, they made it into Vancouver, to give us a night to remember. This time around they have two new members, James Coppolino on drums, and Allan Marcus on guitar. I never miss these guys when they come to town, but wasn't too sure what to expect with some new members on board. Well I or anyone else had nothing to worry about, talk about a tight set, a variety of songs, including some from the new album. Let me tell you, they were tight, probably one of the best sets of theirs that I have seen. The floor was pretty full, the crowd were yelling Abysmal Dawn before they even hit the stage. Was great to see an enthusiastic crowd for them. They put on one hell of a show, one that they nailed, they looked to be really enjoying themselves up there too. If you get a chance, check them out, they are definitely worth it. Phenomenal. Thanks guys for such an amazing set.

Up next is CRYPTOPSY, an extreme technical death metal band out of Montreal. They did a fine job up on stage, I don't recall seeing them before, but I noticed a lot of their t-shirts around. There were plenty of people talking about them after their set. For me, they had the energy, they put on a great set, and I know I will get a lot of backlash for this, but they just were not my taste. Their music rhythm didn't seem to have a steady beat for me to bang my head to. Hold on, don't get me wrong, this is my taste, I didn't say they did a poor job of it. In fact the crowd loved them, and that is what matters.

Now this next band, I didn’t recall seeing them before either, until they hit that stage. A Florida death metal band that makes you pay attention. Who…well OBITUARY of course. Yes, I really enjoyed this band, they had a great set of songs, energy too that flowed around the room. I am surprised I got to stay right up front though, but hang on to that front rail I did. What an exemplary showing of death metal. The crowd was really enthused and you could see that everyone was enjoying this set. Get out there and see this tour, this is not a band to be missed.

CANNIBAL CORPSE, do I really need to say anything about this band out of Florida, who are Death Metal through and through. This band has perfected the term Death Metal. And standing up front, getting the full effect was an honour. Yes, this Metal Mom, was able to stand up front, even with all those crazy crowd surfers. To get the full effect of Cannibal, you need to watch and listen, they have their sound nailed to perfection, their energy transfers to the crowd. They know what the crowd wants and they give it. They played a variety of songs, ones that the crowd was more than happy to listen to. I have to say I don’t know how they do it though, as they play almost every night on this tour, and by the looks of them, they were not tired, or lazy, they gave 150%. I for one really appreciated this and thoroughly enjoyed every second of their set. The Commodore Ballroom is the pinnacle of venues to showcase this band. Also a band that I never miss when they come to town. Make sure you don’t.
