AURA NOIR: OUT TO DIE
Review by Metal Mom

Do you need some unholy black thrash metal in your life, well then this is the band to make it all happen for you. AURA NOIR is from Oslo, Norway, and heavily influenced by early thrash bands like Slayer, Sodom, and Kreator, even going as far as to dedicate some of their songs to these bands. The band was formed in 1993 by Aggressor (Carl-Michael Eide) and Apollyon (ole Jorgen Moe). Who over a course of 19 years went on to put out 2 demos (1994-1995), 1 EP (1995), 5 full length Cds (1996-1998-2004-2008-2012), 2 compilations (2001-2005) and 1 live album in 2006.

Members :

Carl-Michael Eide “Aggressor”:
guitar, vocals and bass (Virus/Satyricon)

Ole Jorgen Moe “Apollyon”:
vocals, guitar, bass and drums (Immortal, Gorgoroth)

Rune “Blasphemer” Erickson:
guitar (Mayhem)

Their 5th album being released on March 23 is called “Out to Die” and it has a total of 8 tracks and for 33 minutes you get a full range of fury and annihilation.

Track listing :

1. Trenches
2. Fed to the Flames
3. Abbadon
4. The Grin from the Gallows
5. Withheld
6. Priest’s Hellish Fiend
7. Deathwish
8. Out to Die

They have been called the ‘ugliest band in the world’, but if that’s true, it doesn’t matter, because they are back, and with this album , they are bringing you some dark and evil songs. Each of these 8 songs are crushing, and they have set out to crucify your soul, and well, its done to perfection here. I wasn’t too sure what to expect, as in my world, I hadn’t yet heard of AURA NOIR, so I was a bit sceptical about doing a review when it involved such heavy hitters (Immortal/Mayhem), plus the fact it’s a thrash band. I am slowly coming around to the thrash genre, especially after listening to this CD. Its full of thrash and metal, mixed in with some blasphemy and you got yourself one “H” of a CD. What I enjoyed the most was that no 2 songs sounded the same, each had something different to it, some a bit slower (don’t get me wrong here, its thrash, so it will never be a long drawn out slow sound). The guitars deliver what I think is a pounding in your face, you wont forget riffs. Adding to the guitar work is Aggressor, who used to play drums for AURA NOIR, until his accident back in 2005, when he allegedly fell out a 4th floor, and became paralyzed from the ankles down. Thankfully he is just as skilled at the guitar, so continues on creating some thrash riffs. The drums are overwhelmingly fast and brutal. The vocals, well because you have 2 distinct ones, it adds to the evil darkness they have created with “Out to Die”. If you like thrash, metal of any kind, then this is beyond any doubt an album that you should have. Especially one to put into your car and crank it up loud, maybe annoy others around you, but one you wont want to stop listening to. So go ahead get it, and crank it up. Enjoy.
