AS I LAY DYING:
DECAS

Review By: Metal Mom

Let me tell you who makes up the Grammy nominated band, there is Tim Lambesis (vocals), also founding member, Jordan Mancino (drums), Nick Hipa (guitar), Phil Sgrosso (guitar), Josh Gilbert (bass/clean vocals). Listening to their newest CD release “Decas” I can see why they have earned a prominent place in the metal community.

AS I LAY DYING has shared the stage with Iron Maiden, Heaven and Hell, Slipknot, Deftones, Hatebreed, Unearth, Mastadon, In Flames, Lamb of God and many more well established bands. They have also played countless festivals such as Warped Tour, Sounds of the Underground, Taste of Chaos, Bamboozle, Ozzfest, Bloodstock and Wacken to name a few. As you can see this band over their 10 year span hasn’t slowed.

This CD has a total of 12 tracks and it’s the one that I think will kick them up a notch. Yes, its true, on numerous occasions they have made the statement that they are “christian”, truthfully does it matter, its all about their sound and how well its put together. The songs are about life, struggles, relationships and other issues, and all are written through a christian perspective. On this album you will find 3 newly recorded songs, 4 covers, 4 remixes, and 1 re-recording. AS I LAY DYING has commemorated this as a gift to their fans who have supported them, and its also a 10 year anniversary CD.

Sometimes I am so surprised when I give a CD a listen, just knowing they were hardcore and punk, I wasn’t in the mood to listen. Again I am proven wrong, give it all a chance. I was definitely happy to review this cd. The musical aspect of it was a real piece of talent. They must enjoy what they do, and work together well to put it all together , solid as a rock. I have my favourites of course , the first track Paralyzed, and Moving Forward, Electric Eye. There was a couple I didn’t like, Coffee Mug for instance it was too fast, couldn’t get into a head banging mode, and the vocals screamed at me, but not too worry, that was a short song. Wrath Upon Ourselves, well sorry, but that one was just too much techno for my liking. But I will say that each and every one of these 12 tracks had something different, which made for a very multifaceted album. The guitar riffs can be heard clearly and play their part to the extreme. The drums ,fast of course, but with some elaborate beats, keeping the tempo such that its an easy head bang. Bass, as you well know , is the heart beat of the band. Vocals, both of them from the deep to the clean, capture and entice you to want more. I thoroughly enjoyed this Cd, except those couple of songs, but the rest makes up for those two. In under 10 years AS I LAY DYING has sold 1,000,000 units, that’s fantastic, but this CD “DECAS” will have them “Moving Forward” to even greater things in their career.

AS I LAY DYING will also be headlining “Decade of Destruction Tour” from November 30th to December 16th in North America. So make sure you check out their tour dates and catch them performing live.
